Avoid Family Strife With Harmonious TV Rules
In family homes it’s very likely that you will find a whole range of different tastes and preferences, and this is as true when it comes to TV shows as it is for many other things. The fight for the remote can be a furious one, especially when two favourite shows on two different channels are on at the same time. With so many different styles of TV programmes out there, from shows aimed at small children to those tailored for the older generation, it can be hard to choose between them and quite often it’s a case of the majority vote ruling – or the parental vote overruling!
However, it’s possible to achieve TV harmony with a few simple rules. For example, why not try segmenting the day so that certain members of the family are allowed control of the box, but only during specific times. This way Mum is the queen of the remote in the morning when she likes to catch up with the news, the kids get the first say in the few hours after school and Dad is allowed to watch his favourite documentaries later in the evening. This can work wonders, because everyone feels as though they have a fair say – even if they don’t always get to watch exactly what they want to.
Early evening is a good time to cast TV shows open to vote however, as it tends to be the period that the most family friendly show are on. Therefore, it’s more likely that you will be able to find something that satisfies the whole family in one go. Comedies and quiz shows are great choices for making sure that everyone gets a good laugh or a chance to interact – just watch out for the family smart-alec who hates getting questions wrong.
Nature shows are another great choice for keeping the whole family entertained, as children and adults alike are captivated by the habits of unusual animals. If you’re still suffering from discord within the ranks and everyone is set on watching different shows at one particular time – why not draw a raffle? Put everyone’s preference on a bit of paper and put them in a bowl, the one drawn is the one you’ll watch. Of course, you can always record the shows that don’t win!
With so many different shows available from TV services such as Sky TV, it’s understandable that everyone wants to be the one to choose the night’s viewing – but play it fair and you’re all likely to enjoy a far better viewing experience.
